(continuation):Animation from America is usually called a "cartoon". Though the term is rather broad and can include any genre many people associate it with animations aimed at the child demographic.Cartoons in America are a norm, same with Anime in Japan. "One Piece or Naruto" to the Japanese is like "Looney Toons" to Americans(ignoring the obvious genre difference)Also in America there is no specific termfor animations from say France, it's still called a cartoon. Anime is a cartoon.

Yes Anime is basically just short for animation.Actually "anime" is (unsurprisingly) not a Japanese term but a French term that the Japanese borrowed. Actually in Japan, when a Japanese person refers to anime they could very well be talking about Family Guy because in Japan anime is any animation from anywhere.However in the U.S (and other countries)Anime is recognized as Japanese animation.(to be continued)
